‘Black Adam’: Dive behind the scenes with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is tearing up headlines this week as fans eagerly await his starring role in DC’s Black Adam. That’s right, folks – The Rock is finally breaking into the comic book movie scene with his first major superhero role and fans couldn’t be more excited. This week, publications across the board donned out some clues as to what the new movie will look like.
The Rock might be getting in the saddle for a comic book movie for the first time, but the action star is no stranger to heroic roles. However, comic book fans are chomping at the bit for another franchise, and Black Adam is the latest DC story to come to the big screen in 2022. So what can we expect from the upcoming blockbuster? Here’s what we found.
Adam who?
Most film fans know the basics when it comes to comic book lore and can keep track of the characters in a movie like Batman Begins or even Venom. However, Black Adam is a little cutty even for the most avid comic book fan. So who is Black Adam, anyway?
Black Adam hails from the DC universe, but isn’t your typical hero. In fact, Black Adam is said to be the arch nemesis of Captain Marvel, AKA Shazam – he’s really more of a villain. Black Adam dropped on comic fans back in 1945, and the gritty antihero has been around nearly eighty years but never made his silver screen debut.
In the DC canon, Black Adam showed up as an ancient Egyptian bad boy, but ended up falling into an antihero role as the DC universe developed through the years. Now, fans are wondering how bad The Rock’s Black Adam will be.
Tease
Black Adam is already drawing in fans with a teaser DC dropped nearly a year ago. In the teaser, we can hear The Rock narrate as visuals paint a picture of Black Adam’s ancient origins.
However, fans can only see animation in the video, with no spoilers given as to how the upcoming Black Adam will look. However, more piping hot Adam tea was spilled last week when photos from the set dropped on ravenous fans.
Dwayne Johnson shared some behind-the-scenes photos to his Instagram last week making fans even more stoked for Black Adam.
In the photo, Dwayne’s followers can see a visual effects specialist applying little white dots to The Rock’s ripped torso. He explained in the caption how the dots will track his movements so CGI technicians can “track and compute [his] muscle fibers intensely activating and moving while BLACK ADAM is raging to seek & destroy his enemies”.
If this description is any indication, Black Adam should be pretty intense. The image gave fans a clue, but The Rock would reveal even more this week when a new photo from the set shocked eager fans.
On set
On Monday, The Rock finally gave fans a first peek on the set of Black Adam. In the photo, we can see Johnson from behind, standing on what appears to be an ancient runway. The action star is wearing his costume which he describes as beautiful, intricate and “not your typical DC or Marvel padded muscle suit”.
Johnson went on to tell his fans Black Adam will introduce a new kind of DC superhero, one who doesn’t have a problem killing his enemies. The rock ended the post repeating his cryptic message from the earlier Black Adam tease, writing “The hierarchy of power in the DC UNIVERSE is changing”. We’re not sure how, but we’ll have to see Black Adam when the film premieres in late July 2022 to find out.
