RuPaul Charles’s ‘Celebrity Drag Race’: Everything we know so far
It seems as though everything RuPaul’s touched lately has been turning to glitter. Coming off of the renewal of both VH1’s Drag Race for its twelfth season and Drag Race All Stars for its fifth season, RuPaul and VH1 have announced the launch of RuPaul’s Celebrity Drag Race in 2020.
How much RuPaul’s Celebrity Drag Race television gold can we expect?
While a specific release date beyond 2020 hasn’t been announced yet, we can tell you that it will be served up in four episodes. Each episode will have three celebrities, with 12 celebrities featured overall. The social media buzz is that filming has already wrapped.
Who’s definitely in on RuPaul’s Celebrity Drag Race?
All of our favorite stars from the original Drag Race have attached themselves to the celebrity spinoff. This includes Alyssa Edwards, Trixie Mattel, Vanessa Vanjie Mateo, Asia O’Hara, Bob the Drag Queen, Kim Chi, Monet X Change, Monique Heart, Nina West, and Trinity the Tuck.
This glam squad will be channeling the canceled Drag U (2010 – 2012, R.I.P.), to transform the stars into the queens that they are before competing to be America’s Next Celebrity Drag Superstar.
Can I get some backstory before RuPaul’s Celebrity Drag Race begins?
RuPaul’s Drag Race has been building its audience since 2009, produced by World of Wonder and originally airing on Logo TV. VH1 picked RuPaul’s Drag Race up for its ninth season in 2017.
In addition to RuPaul, executive producers Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato, Tom Campbell, Steven Corfe, and Mandy Salangsang have built the Drag Race empire, touting 29 Emmy nominations, and 13 wins. You can find the more recent episodes on VH1, while Logo TV still streams seasons 1-9.
Whom are we hoping to see in RuPaul’s Celebrity Drag Race?
We couldn’t be more excited to see what RuPaul, VH1, and the Celebrity Drag Race crew have in store for us. As no celebrity names have been released yet, we can only speculate at this point. We would love to see some of the past judges from the original Drag Race step up to the plate.
Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga’s names are among the most mentioned. We definitely want to see Lizzo competing against Joel McHale and Courtney Love. Regardless of who steps up to the plate – we are 100% in with RuPaul when she says: “I can’t wait for the world to see what happens when our celebrity contestants get all up in drag!”
