Is ‘Sanditon’ season 2 happening? All the clues that say *yes*

If you’re running out of shows to watch, don’t fear, as Sanditon season 2 might be near! After Sanditon’s tragic farewell, we may finally have hope it will return, as some significant clues popped up about a possible second season.  

In February 2020, Sanditon fans started a petition on Change.org to save the Sanditon series. Per Decider, the petition creator told fans: “The finale of Sanditon (season 1) was unfair, unjust, and unsatisfying. It doesn’t end like a true Austen adaptation – it feels like it’s ended halfway through the series.” Since then, the #SaveSanditon hashtag blew up online thanks to fans eagerly trying to save their beloved TV show. 

All about Sanditon

The series was adapted by writer Andrew Davies, who turned Jane Austen’s unfinished masterpiece into the ITV series Sanditon. 

Sanditon season 1 premiered on ITV in August 2019 in the U.S. and five months later on PBS in 2020. The original eight episodes were legendary with each character having their own storyline packed with drama, friendship, and steamy relationships.

Lease renewal? 

Why do fans think Sanditon season 2 is on its way? We may have a clue. Thanks to one superfan’s sleuthing, the Sanditon fandom got hold of information about the renewal of Sanditon’s set location. In January 2020, the fan found a “new lease for the building” with a very interesting name. 

The UK Government Companies House website also included a 2018 listing for an office space for Sanditon’s production company, Red Planet Productions. The company also included the title “Sanditon II.” Eep!

Casting call

Besides for the office space, Sanditon fans also found the UK Casting News site calling for new actors with a similar title as the lease agreement, “SANDITON series II”. 

The casting call for new actors for Sanditon season 2 was advertised on January 15th, the same day as the office space renewal. Fans were even more thrilled, when UK Casting News described the show’s genre as “return of popular drama”. 

Production 

Thanks to the production website provided in the UK casting call, the start date for shooting is scheduled for the summer of 2021. Another surprising piece of information is the network/distributor of season 2 of Sanditon, ITV. ITV was actually the network that killed the show, so why would they be bringing it back? 

Diving deep

Never underestimate the power of the Sanditon fandom! One Sanditon fan actually messaged the UK Casting News website for more information regarding the casting call. 

In fact, this Sanditon fan wasn’t at all subtle when they asked if season 2 will start production in the summer of 2021.  Thankfully UK Casting News replied, “according to the info that we have at this moment, the season II is shooting in Summer.” That’s all we needed to know!

Amazon Prime 

Amazon Prime jumped in on the #SaveSanditon trend, but not in the way we expected. Amazon Prime Video UK tweeted that they were thinking about the possibility back in June 2020. Fans were asked to retweet Amazon’s vague message, which actually reached a total of 17.4 thousand retweets.

Liam Hoops

One of Sanditon’s script supervisors, Liam Hoops, tweeted about the hype about a possible season 2. He stated he’s definitely “keeping quiet” until he hears something. 

Though no official announcement has been made, Sanditon season 2 could be coming thanks to the casting call, Amazon Prime & Liam Hoop’s intriguing tweet, and the office space renewal.
