Women with power: What to watch now ‘Supergirl’ is done for the season

Season four of Supergirl just wrapped, which means we all need to start panic-planning what the hell to do with our Sunday nights without it. Though we’re unsure there are many shows that can adequately take the place of the DC young adult series, there are a few we think should certainly grab both your attention and your affection in the long wait until season five arrives.

Some of these are new shows currently airing, while others are new seasons of established shows – but all of them are bingeable. Here are eight shows Supergirl fans should watch to fill that Kara-shaped void in your life.

8. Siren

Freeform’s killer mermaid tale is actually far more than just a strange supernatural yarn. As well as featuring compelling strong female characters like Maddie (Fola Evans-Akingbola) and Ryn (Eline Powell), the show also showcases a rarely seen queer love triangle – yes the mermaid is involved – sure to appeal to Supergirl fans who appreciate the show’s LGBTQI representation.

7. iZombie

Granted, The CW show bares very little relation to Supergirl besides sharing the same network – and the supreme talents of the wonderful Rahul Kohli (Happy Anniversary) – but we still think it’s one of the perfect shows to watch while you wait for the next season of Supergirl to arrive.

6. Cloak & Dagger

Marvel’s latest show has already created quite a buzz for itself on Freeform, with critics applauding the young adult superhero tale for tackling current social issues with depth and compassion. Dagger (Olivia Holt) might not be quite as wholesome a hero as Supergirl, but she’s just as strong and principled.

5. The Good Fight

S2 of the CBS legal drama has just ended. However, we urge fans of Supergirl to give it a bingewatch even if it outwardly seems to be a little far flung from the tone of The CW show. The women of The Good Fight (played by a formidable cast in Christine Baranski, Cush Jumbo, and Rose Leslie) might not have superpowers, but these ladies kick ass, thus proving not all heroes wear capes.

4. GLOW

Come on, this one’s a no-brainer, right? S3 of the Netflix Originals show hits the streaming platform later this summer and you’re most definitely going to want to check back in with the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling – played by superwomen including Alison Brie (Community), Sydelle Noel (Black Panther), Betty Gilpin (Fringe), and Sunita Mani (Mr. Robot) – to get your fill of kickass women in Supergirl’s absence.

3. Luke Cage

S2 droped on Netflix last year, with Misty Knight (Simone Missick) and Colleen Wing (Jessica Henwick) stepping up to combine their powers to kick even more ass together. Sadly, the show won’t be coming back for a third season – but we’ll always be able to rewatch it.

2. Wynonna Earp

The second season of the supernatural Western show finally landed on Netflix last year, while season three premiered on Syfy last July. That means it’s high time for a bingewatch if you haven’t already. Wynonna Earp shares the same sense of fun as Supergirl, but with a strange horror twist and a ruthless heroine (played by Melanie Scrofano) you’ll definitely obsess over.

1. Impulse

The newest YouTube Originals show is another about young people with superpowers, currently receiving mass acclaim for its balance of fantasy and drama. Following a young woman (Maddie Hasson) who develops supernatural powers after being sexually assaulted by a classmate, the show offers a powerful and timely take on the current teenage superhero trend.
