Olympics 2021: All the women who won medals in this year’s sporting event
Humans are prone to shows. We were born to tell stories and come together for peace. Sports are a great way of bringing us together, and sporting events can be intense & pure poetry. It allows a bunch of strangers to gather together like a herd and share shows of a lifetime. They’re perfect for getting the attention of the masses and getting away from the monotonous work often congesting our days.
Unfortunately, many people will remember 2020, (even much of 2021) as a year that gave us a pandemic, infecting millions of families, friends, and neighbors. Millions more people came out and protested the aging stormcloud of racism. 2020 will definitely make its way to the history books and after such a year, we could all use some unifying joy.
It might not be women’s history month, but we don’t need a single time of the year to honor women! Women’s history is a part of human history which we observe every day of our lives. Recognizing the achievements of women in science, art, government and sports, brings a profound impact on the self-image and development of girls and young women. Especially when it comes to the confidence of girls thinking about their future!
Olympics 2021 will surely live in the memories of millions. Let’s take a moment to bring women’s history month to August and honor all the women who won medals in this year’s sporting event!
Peruth Chemutai
Peruth Chemutai is a Ugandan steeplechase runner. In 2018, she won second place in the World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, and took fifth in the African Championships in Asaba, Nigeria and World Championships in Doha, Qatar that same year. Come the 2021 Olympics, she won first place.
Chemutai just became Uganda’s first female olympic gold medalist after winning the 3000m steeplechase at the Olympic Stadium. “I am feeling great. Today I made it. It is the first time Uganda gets the gold medal in 3000m steeplechase. I am so happy to be an olympic champion, said Peruth.
When Chemutai was steady leading the 1,000m mark, Frerichs broke away early. She made a good gap between herself and Chemutai. Then the bell rang for the final lap. She chased down Frerichs before crossing the finish line in a new national record, taking her place in the history books.
U.S.A’s Women’s Basketball
The Australian team beat the U.S.A in a pre-Olympics exhibition, but they were no match for the Americans in a tournament elimination game. Breanna Stewart scored twenty-three points which was paramount to their 79-55 win in Japan.
Yosozumi Sakura
Yosozumi Sakura is a professional skateboarder and gold medalist at the 2018 Asain Games and 2020 Summer Olympics. Inspired by her older brother, Sakura began her skating in 2013. In the 2020 Summer Olympics which too was held in Japan, Sakura competed in the very first Olympic women’s park skateboarding competition. She won the gold medal.
Kokona Hiraki
Not all the 2021 Olympic champions on this list are women! Twelve-year old Kokona Hiraki is a Japanese skateboarder like Sakura. She took home the silver medal in the women’s park event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, making her the youngest Japanese athlete on record to be a part of the Summer Olympic games.
Hiraki won the silver medal in the 2021 Olympics.
Athing Mu
Mu is a middle-distance runner. When she was sixteen years old, she broke the American indoor 600m record in just 0.13 seconds off of the world record. And she hasn’t stopped! Mu has broken record after record from 400m all the way to 800m. In this season alone, she can take credit for breaking six collegiate records.
She won the women’s 800m gold, setting a national record!
Gabrielle Thomas
Gabrielle Thomas is an American track-and-field star. She’s credited as being the third-fastest women’s runner of all time in the two-hundred metres. In the 2020 Summer Olympics, she took home the bronze medal at the two-hundred mattress event.
She won the bronze in the 2021 Olympics as well.
Simone Biles
Remember back in 2018, we heard that Simone Biles “destroyed everyone – even with a kidney stone? Originally, it was suspected that she had appendicitis. Then scans discovered a large kidney stone. Biles was in a lot of pain but she didn’t pass the stone and left the hospital. She still competed, despite the pain.
She’s an artistic gymnast and owns thirty-two Olympic and World Championship medals. Biles is one of the most decorated gymnasts of all time. In the 2021 Olympics, she won the bronze medal in the women’s beam final.
