Does ‘The Batman”s new trailer confirm Robert Pattinson is the best Batman?
Last Saturday, the lackluster DC Fandome event dropped its latest trailer for the new The Batman, directed by Dawn of the Planet of the Apes filmmaker Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader. The latest trailer, while not giving too much away, still managed to highlight just why fans should no longer be skeptical of the former Twilight star donning the cape & cowl.
DC Fandome, which sort of kicked off last year thanks to COVID-19, gave fans of the DC comic world much to look forward to on Saturday. The event featured many surprises, including behind-the-scenes footage of Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom, behind-the-scenes footage of Shazam: Fury of the Gods, a first teaser at The Flash, and even an update on Wonder Woman 3. However, it was all about the new The Batman.
Of course, many will recall how fans were quick to criticize the casting choice of Batman by Reeves, furious that he chose a Twilight star rather than another actor. However, many who have seen Pattinson’s work after the Twilight Saga were quick to defend the star, bringing up how much of the general audience was equally distraught when Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker in 2008’s The Dark Knight. Pattinson will be great!
The Batman
The Batman is an upcoming story of the caped crusader during his second year of fighting crime in Gotham, separate as far as we know from the DCEU, much like 2019’s Joker.
Directed by Matt Reeves, the film stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne AKA Batman, Andy Serkis as his loyal Butler Alfred, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, and John Turturro as Carmine Falcone. If that new The Batman trailer told us anything it’s that we’re all in for one h$!! of a ride with this amazing cast.
Matt Reeves has stated in the past that he wanted his version of Batman to be a noir-style detective film, a genre that previous Batman iterations vaguely explored. Of course, this project first came into being after Ben Affleck ultimately left his own Batman film for the DC universe, in which he was set to both direct and star in before deciding to move off what was once considered his “dream” project.
Nevertheless, we couldn’t be more excited for this film than we already are, given its run of impressive trailers as well as the film’s creative team. That being said, amazing cast aside, there is still one major question mark that seems to be looming for the generic film audience, and that’s the casting choice of Robert Pattinson, an actor who, if you haven’t been watching closely, has been on one heck of a run in his Hollywood career.
Will Robert Pattinson be the best Batman?
In May of 2019, it was reported that, once Ben Affleck dropped out of the project, there would be a new Batman film in the works separate from the DC Universe. Around this time, it was revealed that Twilight actor Robert Pattinson was on the shortlist of actors whom the studio wanted to play Bruce Wayne, alongside Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Armie Hammer.
Matt Reeves was joyous that Pattinson agreed to dawn the cape & cowl, given his recent tenure starring in Indie films. But will Robert Pattinson be the best live-action Batman we’ve had yet? Given what we saw in the new The Batman trailer, things are looking well regarding his chances, honing the young, broken Bruce Wayne who’s still motivated by anger, leaving his true identity to be the Batman while Bruce is only the disguise.
Past Batman actors played the role well, don’t get us wrong. Michael Keaton was ominous and surprisingly threatening, while Val Kilmer easily slipped into the psyche of a boy who saw his parents get murdered. Heck, even George Clooney played the billionaire philanthropist well; just not the Batman side of things. But c’mon, Christian Bale is the measuring stick we’re holding Pattinson up to once the new film comes out.
