The Job

Film Daily is a leading online publication dedicated to providing insightful and engaging coverage of the film and television industry. We’re seeking a talented and passionate individual to join our team as Deputy Editor. In this role, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the magazine’s content strategy, managing a team of writers, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality articles and features.

Responsibilities

Editorial management

  • Collaborate with editor-in-chief to develop and execute editorial vision.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the editorial department, ensuring adherence to deadlines and quality standards.
  • Assign articles, features, and reviews to writers, providing clear guidelines and constructive feedback.
  • Edit and proofread articles for accuracy, style, grammar, and formatting.

Content strategy

  • Stay updated with the latest trends and news in the film and television industry, identifying relevant topics for coverage.
  • Assist in developing the magazine’s content strategy, ensuring a balance of news, features, interviews, and reviews.
  • Conduct research to identify potential interviewees, industry experts, and emerging talents for exclusive content opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the social media team to ensure consistent and engaging cross-platform content distribution.

Team management

  • Supervise and mentor a team of writers, fostering their professional growth and ensuring a cohesive editorial voice.
  • Conduct regular team meetings, providing guidance, feedback, and support to enhance individual and team performance.
  • Recruit and onboard new writers, conducting interviews and assessing writing samples.
  • Coordinate with other departments, such as photography and design, to ensure seamless integration of visual elements into articles.

Quality control

  • Maintain high editorial standards by ensuring articles are factually accurate, well-researched, and adhere to the magazine’s style guide.
  • Review and approve article pitches, outlines, and final drafts, ensuring they align with the magazine’s editorial standards.
  • Conduct thorough fact-checking to verify accuracy of information and quotes.
  • Stay vigilant for potential legal and ethical issues and address them appropriately.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field – advanced degree preferred
  • Proven experience in digital media, journalism, or related roles, with a strong focus on film and television content
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with a keen eye for detail and a solid understanding of AP style
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a team, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment
  • In-depth knowledge of the film and television industry, including current trends, key players, and emerging talents
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills, including ability to prioritize tasks and meet tight deadlines
  • Proficiency in content management systems (CMS), SEO best practices, and social media platforms
  • Familiarity with digital analytics tools to track and analyze the performance of published content

SEO

  • In-depth understanding of SEO principles, techniques, and best practices
  • Familiarity with keyword research tools and the ability to identify relevant keywords and phrases for content optimization
  • Experience optimizing content for search engines, including metadata, headings, and on-page elements
  • Knowledge of link-building strategies including ability to create content that attracts quality backlinks

Research

  • Proficient in conducting thorough research on a wide range of topics.
  • Skilled in gathering information from various sources and synthesizing it into well-structured and authoritative content.
  • Ability to validate information and ensure accuracy and credibility of sources.
  • Strong analytical skills to identify trends, insights, and opportunities for content optimization.

Adaptability & creativity

  • Ability to adapt writing style and tone to suit different industries, target audiences, and content formats
  • Creativity to develop innovative content ideas and angles that resonate with readers & drive engagement
  • Maintain knowledge of latest industry trends, SEO algorithms, and content marketing practices.
  • Openness to feedback and a willingness to continuously learn & improve writing skills

Experience & education

  • Proven experience as an SEO content writer, copywriter, or related role
  • 2 years experience as a deputy editor for an online magazine
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, marketing, or a related field (preferred but not required)
  • Portfolio of writing samples showcasing a range of content styles, SEO optimization, and industry expertise
