Is hype for the ‘Among Us’ app dead? What people are playing now

In a year that swayed from strange to unsettling to downright scary, Among Us, the social deduction gaming app, became a harbor of refuge. The app was launched way back in June 2018 by a fledgling indie gaming studio called InnerSloth, but the murder mystery app witnessed an unprecedented rise in popularity during the quarantine as several of Twitch’s popular faces began playing the game.

Among Us’s cartoonish deception world seemingly came out of nowhere and became 2020’s sleeper hit. The app managed to confound expectations by attracting everyone from seasoned gamers to first-timers looking for a novel way to kill time, even New York state representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joined in on the fun by teaming up with other gamers in a record-breaking stream of Among Us

However, it seems like the initial glitz is wearing off, and the app that edged out powerful titles is waning in popularity. According to SullyGnome, Among Us has witnessed a steady decline in viewership on Twitch. While Twitch’s viewership metrics aren’t necessarily the most conclusive way of tracking a game’s popularity, there’s no denying that it has become a big factor in deciding a title’s authority.

Now that hype around Among Us might be hurtling towards a not-so-happy end, here’s a roundup of trending buzzworthy games you can check out.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

Developed by Valve & Hidden Path Entertainment, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is a multiplayer first-person shooter video game that routinely tops Twitch’s gaming metrics. The game sees two teams fighting each other in vicious objective-based battles which makes it an ideal game for players who are looking for more competitive & fast-paced action.

League of Legends

Few (if any) games encounter the level of popularity League of Legends is currently experiencing. The title was released in 2009 but it’s still light years ahead of the competition. Developed by Riot Games, League of Legends has been free-to-play since its inception and is monetized through purchasable character customization. Perhaps, that’s why this MOBA video game continues to draw huge numbers.

Rocket League

Rocket League is a vehicular soccer video game wreaking havoc on Twitch. The title pits two teams of vehicles against each other in a highly competitive match of soccer. Apart from the addicting gameplay and diverse play modes, Rocket League’s extensive customization features & cosmetics are arguably one of the chief attractions of this soccer-meets-cars mayhem.

FIFA 21

The newest entry in EA’s long-running soccer series, FIFA 21 gives you a true-to-life experience of being a pro footballer. EA’s soccer sim has been getting better & better with each installment, but FIFA 21 takes the cake for having the most polished gameplay yet. The current-gen version has over 17,000 players & 700+ teams alongside more than 90 stadiums & 30+ leagues.

Rust

Much like the rise of Among Us, Rust is a game that’s slowly climbing the charts with almost every big-name streamer taking on this challenging game of survival. Developed by Facepunch Studios, Rust is a multiplayer-only game that puts players on a procedurally generated map where they must scavenge & craft supplies to survive in the wilderness while managing their hunger & health, or risk dying.

Apex Legends

When Apex Legends initially burst onto the scene, its unique battle royale experience rocked the gaming world. Respawn’s free-to-play first-person hero shooter battle royale game broke through an already overcrowded genre with its innovative features & style. Apex Legends brought a plethora of advances to the battle royale formula and incorporated diverse hero characters along with a flexible ping system.

Do you think the hype around the Among Us app is dying down? Or will the viewership bounce back? Let us know down in the comments.
