Casino Royale

The most famous British spy, James Bond 007, certainly does not look out of place at the high-rolling tables and in Casino Royale, these are found in Montenegro. He is well known for his dapper appearance, charming ladies, stunning cars, and the best spy gadgets manufactured, especially for him. He finds himself at the poker tables, and the stakes are high; his mission is to prevent a money laundering ring with a banker working for terrorists.

21

Although there are countless Hollywood embellishments, this film is based on a true story of a group of MIT students who beat the casino by counting cards in an elaborate scheme, headed up by their professor, played by Kevin Spacey. It’s high-paced, action-packed and is one of the most impressive real heists ever carried out at a casino. There was no need to break into bank faults, steal money, or wear balaclavas; the team simply beat the system and worked out how to play together to successfully count the cards and take the money. Sadly, for the team, the action did not last, as they were caught and prosecuted.

Casino

No list of gambling movies would be complete without Casino. The biopic tale tells the story of Sam Rothstein, the manager of a casino in Las Vegas. Running in parallel, we also see some of the high rollers at the casino, and the story crosses between running and playing, and of course, some deceit and illicit affairs thrown in. The 1995 film was directed by Martin Scorsese and starred Robert De Niro as Sam ‘Ace’ Rothstein, Sharon Stone as Ginger McKenna and Joe Pesci as Nicki Santoro.

Ocean’s 11, 12 and 13

This is a classic heist movie and features some big-name Hollywood A-listers planning the most elaborate casino sting ever seen. The tagline says, 11 men, three casinos, hundred and $50 million and one chance to pull it off. It was so successful that we also have Ocean’s 12 and Ocean’s 13, all following the fortunes of the criminal gang. Scattered across the movies are George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Julia Roberts, Andy Garcia, and many others.

The Gambler

It’s a very old story; many people, fictional and real, have turned to gambling to try and win the money to pay off their debts. The Gambler follows a university professor with something of a gambling addiction, playing high-stakes poker in an attempt to clear his debts. Of course, the results aren’t always positive. Released in 2014, it features Mark Wahlberg as the protagonist and is based on a 1974 film of the same name.
