The evidence for efficacy of the German Acupuncture Trials (GERAD) of 1162 patients with chronic low back pain compared verum acupuncture, sham acupuncture and a conventional therapy group as the control.

The effectiveness of acupuncture, both verum and sham, was almost twice that of conventional therapy 6 months after the trial. Acupuncture is recommended for patients with chronic LBP due to its cost-effectiveness and low adverse effects.
