9 of the Best Movies About Weed

When we think about the funniest movies to watch high, there are a few obvious classics that come to mind: Pineapple Express, Dazed and Confused, and Half Baked are at the top of that list. Whether you’re an avid smoker or not, stoner movies offer a great way to entertain yourself — and usually have a good laugh — on your next movie night at home. So, roll yourself a joint, pack a bowl, or dab with a nectar collector and join us as we recall eight of the best movies about weed.

1. Dazed and Confused

In 1993, writer/director Richard Linklater bestowed Dazed and Confused upon the world and the stoner world was forever changed. Set in 1976, this stoner movie, starring Matthew McConaughey, Jason London, and Milla Jovovich gave us a glimpse of how the cool kids party. This movie is nostalgic (even for those of us born after the 1970s), funny and totally memorable.

2. Smiley Face

In Gregg Araki’s Smiley Face, aspiring actress Jane — played by Anna Faris, gives into her munchies by eating her roommate’s weed-laced cupcakes. The movie follows her as she attempts to tackle the day’s list of to-dos while she’s high as a kite and, as you can probably expect, hilarity ensues.

3. Super High Me

Comic Doug Benson parodies Super Size Me in this documentary weed movie. In this 1 hour and 34 minute film, we watch Benson abstain from weed use for a full month before he spends a full 30 days smoking all the weed he can get his hands on.

4. Pineapple Express

You can’t go wrong when Judd Apatow, Evan Goldberg, and Seth Rogen get together but throw a ton of weed in the mix and you’ve got yourself an absolute masterpiece. In this 2008 comedy, Rogen plays a process server who witnesses a murder with his drug dealer ( played by James Franco).

The two go on the run from hitmen and corrupt cops as total chaos erupts. The supporting cast, which includes Craig Robinson and Danny McBride, add some hilarious one-liners that make this movie unforgettable.

5. Up in Smoke

Up in Smoke is a classic Cheech and Chong movie that’s hilarious from start to finish. Perhaps a bit ahead of its time, Up in Smoke is often hailed as one of the original stoner movies. This movie is chock-full of classic lines — who doesn’t remember, “Dave’s not here man.”

6. Reefer Madness

What good is a list of movies about weed without Reefer Madness on it? This cult classic from 1936 is a propaganda film that was meant to discourage high school students from using marijuana. In the film, it’s insinuated that smoking weed will drive you to commit crimes, hallucinate, and, ultimately, descend into absolute madness.

While the film was originally distributed for educational purposes, it gained new popularity in the 1970s among pot users, who consider the film satire.

7. Half Baked

Starring Dave Chapelle and Jim Breuer, Half Baked is one of the best-known stoner movies out there. Written by Dave Chapelle and Neal Brennan (the comedy team behind Chapelle’s Show), this hilarious movie follows four lifelong stoner friends as they get insanely high on potent weed from a medical laboratory. When one gets arrested, the friends start their own marijuana business and find themselves in all kinds of trouble.

8. Harold and Kumar Go To Whitecastle

When you get the munchies, what’s better than one (or 100) of those tiny White Castle cheeseburgers? If you’re Harold and Kumar, absolutely nothing. Follow these best friends, played by Harold Lee and Kumar Patel, as they get high and head to White Castle. They encounter a few obstacles throughout their journey, including a raccoon and Neil Patrick Harris, who plays himself.

9. Ted

Buddy movies are the best, especially when half of the buddy duo is a walking, talking teddy bear. In Ted, John Bennett (played by Mark Wahlberg) wishes his teddy bear to life as a child and as the two grow older, they stay best buds.

Adult Ted is a vulgar, drinking, weed-smoking bear who is guaranteed to keep you entertained throughout the entire movie. This weed movie is Seth Macfarlane’s directorial debut and features co-stars such as Mila Kunis and Giovanni Ribisi.

10. How High

Starring Redman and Method Man, How High is about two friends who are visited by the ghost of an old friend who’s summoned by smoking weed that’s been fertilized with their deceased friend’s ashes. The ghost helps them pass college entrance exams, obtain scholarships, and navigate relationships in school. This hilarious movie sees these two stoners get into all types of trouble for stealing, vandalizing, and wreaking havoc at school.

Puff, Puff, Watch

While it’s not necessary, these movies about weed are definitely more enjoyable when you get in the right frame of mind first. If you’re an avid smoker, you’re probably used to rolling up a joint or packing your pipe before movie night but shatter can give you a cleaner, more potent high. If you plan on sitting down with one of these great weed movies this weekend, make sure to grab some shatter, and a few of your favorite munchies first.
