Hunter Biden laptop: Learn all about the *true* “conspiracy theories”
As much as both presidents may have preferred to keep the details under wraps, the Twitter files continue to reveal stunning information about the increasing power of social media, and the waning influence of both Trump & Biden. With each new unsavory detail, the idea that social media platforms are the true rulers of the world becomes less and less conspiracy and more grounded in reality.
In the latest of a series of tweet threads detailing the contents of the files, it seems like the son of current President Biden may have done more than a few things to make his dad look bad. While lightyears away from the treasonous actions of Trump’s inciting of insurrection, the details nevertheless paint a not-so-nice picture of Biden’s family.
Let’s take a closer look at what the Twitter files say about Hunter Biden’s laptop.
Shadowy practices
On October 14, 2020, the New York Post published an expose based on the contents of Hunter Biden’s abandoned laptop. Journalists Emma-Jo Morris & Gabrielle Fonrouge were the first to break the story.
“Hunter Biden introduced his father, then-Vice President Joe Biden, to a top executive at a Ukrainian energy firm,” they reported. “This was less than a year before the elder Biden pressured government officials in Ukraine into firing a prosecutor investigating the company, according to emails from The New York Post.”
The news didn’t stop there. “The never-before-revealed meeting is mentioned in a message of appreciation that Vadym Pozharskyi, an adviser to the board of Burisma, allegedly sent Hunter Biden on April 17, 2015, about a year after Hunter joined the Burisma board at a reported salary of up to $50,000 a month.” they continued.
According to Taibbi’s findings in the Twitter files, Twitter took extraordinary steps to suppress the story, removing links and posting warnings that it may be “unsafe.” “They even blocked its transmission via direct message, a tool hitherto reserved for extreme cases, e.g. child pornography,” he said.
Unfavorable lockouts
In another example, “White House spokeswoman Kaleigh McEnany was locked out of her account for tweeting about the story,” says Taibbi. “This prompted a furious letter from Trump campaign staffer Mike Hahn, who seethed: “At least pretend to care for the next 20 days.”
It didn’t stop there. “This led public policy executive Caroline Strom to send out a polite WTF query. Several employees noted that there was tension between the comms/policy teams, who had little/less control over moderation, and the safety/trust teams, Taibbi continued. “Strom’s note returned the answer that the laptop story had been removed for violation of the company’s “hacked materials” policy.”
If you can believe it, it didn’t even stop there. “Although several sources recalled hearing about a “general” warning from federal law enforcement that summer about possible foreign hacks, there’s no evidence – that I’ve seen – of any government involvement in the laptop story,” Taibbi reports. “In fact, that might have been the problem.”
Behind the back
The decision was made at the highest levels of the company, but without the knowledge of CEO Jack Dorsey, with the former head of legal, policy, and trust Vijaya Gadde playing a key role.
“They just freelanced it,” is how one former employee characterized the decision. “Hacking was the excuse, but within a few hours, pretty much everyone realized that wasn’t going to hold. But no one had the guts to reverse it.”
As time goes on, it seems more and more likely that each of the big three social media platforms has enough inside information to bring down even the most powerful politicians in the world. If that is not power, we don’t know what is.
