'The Late Late Show' host James Corden has given his emotional stance on the Super League. What will this mean for European football in the years to come?

‘The Late Late Show’: Watch James Corden’s heated Super League rant

It was announced this past weekend that twelve of Europe’s top football clubs, including Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Tottenham Hotspur would be launching a breakaway “Super League”, a move described by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez that will “help football at every level” and will hopefully “take it [football] to its rightful place in the world”.

However, this move has gained much backlash from current stakeholders, as the remaining fourteen Premier League Clubs reportedly held an emergency meeting this morning to decide the next course of action following the news of the Super League. However, it’s not only the world of European football that is up in arms over this news, as football fans from around the world have expressed their displeasure over this issue.

This includes the host of The Late Late Show, James Corden, who took nearly eight minutes of airtime during Monday night’s show to grieve about the Super League, and the implications it could have on the rest of the soccer world. Shall we dig a bit deeper regarding the issue? Of course! But first, feel free to watch James Corden’s entire rant from last night’s show.

What is the Super League?

ESPN had reported that it’s possible that up to fifteen teams of Europe’s biggest and most competitive clubs could be launching this European Super League as early as the 2023-2024 season, which is really not that far off.

“By bringing together the world’s greatest clubs and players to play each other throughout the season, the Super League will open a new chapter for European football, ensuring world-class competition and facilities, and increased financial support for the wider football pyramid,” said Joel Glazer, co-owner of Manchester United and vice chairman of the Super League.

The format of Super League would detail two groups of ten playing home & away game fixtures, with the top three teams in each grouping able to qualify for the quarterfinals. “Our 12 founder clubs represent billions of fans across the globe and 99 European trophies,” said Juventus president Andrea Agnelli, professing how this move would help secure the long-term future of the game while preserving the traditions of old.

James Corden erupts

While both the Premier League and UEFA have already expressed their own displeasures regarding the Super League, The Late Late Show host James Corden had a few sentiments of his own to share with the world. “It’s the end of the sport we love” proclaimed The Late Late Show host, who was seemingly distraught over the news of a tentative new league during Monday’s show.

Corden offered the following soliloquy: “ The truth is, this whole thing, making this move, these teams, these owners are killing, they will kill hundreds of other football teams that compete with them and have competed with them many times over the years, disregarding the fan bases of those teams and disregarding the fan bases of their own teams who are devastated too.”

He continued: “I’m heartbroken by it, genuinely heartbroken by it. I’m heartbroken because the owners of these teams have displayed the worst kind of greed I’ve ever seen in sport. And these dreams, they’ve just been shattered not just in Britain, but all across Europe. And the reason these dreams have been shattered and discarded is so that a group of billionaires can buy themselves a bigger boat, or a second boat.”
