Lizzo stays true to her "Cuz I Love You" lyrics as she defends Demi Lovato's preferred pronounces. Why is this moment caught on camera important?

“Cuz I Love You”: How did this paparazzo offend Lizzo and Demi Lovato?

Pronoun wars rage on! In the era of cancel culture, perhaps one of the worst things you can do these days is mess up somebody’s preferred pronouns, as it is important to recognize an individual’s stance as it pertains to which gender roles they feel most comfortable with. We get it, and while it may take some forgiveness as we get used to these rapid changes, we’re totally behind people feeling comfortable with who they are.

A huge advocate of this notion is the “Cuz I Love You” singer Lizzo, who has taken it upon herself these past few years to fight those who body shame her while defending those who are confident about being overweight. Now, it appears that Lizzo had spilled these same defense mechanisms over to her clsoe Hollywood friends, including Demi Lovato, and their choice to come out as nonbinary.

It surprised the world last May when Demi Lovato, star of Camp Rock came out as non-binary, choosing to roll with they/their pronouns. It was a move that many fans had hoped was the root of Lovato’s mental illness and drug addiction, hoping that this weight off of their shoulders would help improve their overall quality of life. And now, thanks to Lizzo, more and more people are behind Lovato’s choices. But how?

“Cuz I Love You”, Demi

Lizzo, popular for her songs “Cuz I Love You” and “Truth Hurts”, was recently spotted outside an L.A. event where she was snapping photos with fans as well as signing autographs. Also present were the paparazzi, asking Lizzo questions at rapid-fire, specifically regarding the upcoming 2021 Jazz Fest and if she had any plans on collaborating with Demi Lovato.

Lizzo first acknowledged how she and Demi Lovato don’t actually have any songs together. However, once one paparazzo asked Lizzo if “She should reach out,” Lizzo quickly responded with the correction “They.” The paparazzo ignored Lizzo’s correction, asking once more “Have your team contact her team?” Lizzo responded once more, saying “Their team; Demi goes by they.” Well done, Lizzo.

A video of the incident was quickly posted on several social media accounts, including one Demi Lovato fan account, which caused the “Confident” singer to repost with the response “@lizzobeeating you f#&@^!% queen I love you, thank you!” Sarcastically, the paparazzi could be heard after Lizzo entered a building shouting “thank you for correcting me.” Pretty snarky, if you ask us.

Demi fighting for freedom

Of course, many will recall when the “Dancing With The Devil” singer came out as nonbinary last May, ultimately revealing their preferred they/them pronouns on an episode of their podcast, 4D With Demi. They made the following statement to notify their fans just how they were feeling, and the relief they’ve been given after revealing their true feelings regarding their emotional & physical self.

“Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all – I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward,” Lovato said in a video posted to their social media accounts, adding, “I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones.”

What a truly special moment for Demi Lovato! We hope that more stars like Lizzo will come out to defend pronoun preferences in the years to come.
