These heartfelt ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ moments feel different now

When a scandal breaks out around a celebrity, you suddenly find yourself looking at everything they’ve done in a new light. With the news of what was going on behind the scenes of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, it makes everyone side-eye every act of charity, every message of being kind, basically everything that the show has ever done. It’s all pretty much tainted due to how hateful things allegedly were behind the scenes.

The thing is, however, we’re left wondering should we be surprised. The Ellen DeGeneres Show got pretty mean-spirited at times. Though it was dressed up in jokes and laughter, maybe we should look at those moments in a brand new light. Maybe these moments really did showcase that, yeah, Ellen and her show were pretty mean spirited all along.

Trying to force Mariah Carey to drink

Mariah Carey had a swirl of pregnancy rumors surrounding her back in 2008. Naturally, with all those rumors about, Ellen asked her if they were true when she came on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. Carey, of course, wouldn’t say one way or the other. So Ellen tried to entrap her by trying to make her drink alcohol to prove she wasn’t pregnant.

Carey refused, and had a miscarriage weeks after her appearance on the show. Looking back at the scene, it was cringey beforehand. Don’t force someone to drink either way. Plus, it made light of such issues like fetal alcohol syndrome. Adding in that Carey was pregnant and miscarried? It’s the worst kind of look possible. 

Blake Shelton and the clock

Blake Shelton appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and was given a clock. Well, the next time he came back? Ellen brought up the clock. And, oh boy, there were apparently some shenanigans behind the scenes regarding that freaking clock. One of the crew members came up to Shelton and asked for the clock back. He never saw it again! 

To Shelton’s credit, he called foul to Ellen’s face on her own talk show. In the grand scheme of things, at least in Hollywood, you want to be nice to the celebrities right? Or do you want to poke the fandom bear? Fans have tried to ruin people’s careers for less. Either way, it goes to show that a lot of the crew of the Ellen DeGeneres Show didn’t have respect for each other or their guests.

NikkieTutorials

YouTube beauty vlogger NikkieTutorials didn’t have the ideal coming out experience when she came out as trans (basically she was blackmailed into it). Going on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Nikkie thought that the experience would be nice. After all, Ellen is LGBTQ+ and has that whole “be kind” philosophy, right? Wrong. Nikkie was more than happy to share about how awkward and wrong she felt when she appeared.

On an appearance on De Wereld Draait Door, she said, “Call me naive, but I kind of expected to be welcomed with confetti cannons: ‘Welcome to The Ellen DeGeneres Show!’ But instead, I was greeted by an angry intern who was a bit overworked. I was expecting a Disney show but got Teletubbies After Dark.”

NikkieTutorials and other celebrities have clapped back at Ellen’s problematic behavior. Let’s take a look at all the celebrities who thought Ellen was mean.

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift seems to be in a better place then she was during her Reputation days. Or, at least, albums like Lover and folklore are giving us that impression. Seriously, though, we needed to get off the poor woman’s back about her dating life! Ellen didn’t really help matters much on that front. 

When Swift appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Ellen decided to play a “game” with Swift. In it, she had a slideshow of Swift’s rumored romantic entanglements. Swift was told to “ring a bell” for everyone that she dated. It put her on the spot in such a big and humiliating way. Plus, it definitely had some slut-shaming vibes to it. 

Dakota Johnson

Square up, Ellen. Dakota Johnson was here for no one’s shiitake mushrooms when she appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2019. While we may not stan her for 50 Shades of Grey, the internet stans Dakota Johnson for how thoroughly she read Ellen when Ellen tried an ambush tactic over how Johnson didn’t invite her to her birthday.

Johnson confirmed that Ellen was invited, making her producer confirm it. She even went as far as to say that she thought that Ellen didn’t like her based on past experiences. To top of it, Johnson called Tig Notaro her favorite comedian to Ellen’s face. What a queen.
