‘Little Women’ movie: All its best quotes to live your life by

Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women is one of those perfect films. Capturing the spirit of the book while also updating the material to appear to modern audiences, Gerwig did some monumental work that’s just not being acknowledged. (We’re bitter about that Best Director snub, folks.)

Even so, we were enraptured by the tale of sisterhood focusing on Meg (Emma Watson), Jo (Saorise Ronan), Beth (Eliza Scanlan), and Amy (Florence Pugh) as they grow over the years. Little Women has also given us some glorious quotes from the inspiration to the gut-wrenching. When Jo cried out that she was so lonely, we all felt that, right? How can we forget the most famous last lines from the most beautiful books ever written, “Oh, my girls, however long you may live, I never can wish you a greater happiness than this.”

Here are some quotes from Little Women. Particularly those to live your life by.

Meg

“Just because my dreams are different than yours, it doesn’t mean they’re unimportant.”

“I try to be contented, but it is hard. I’m tired of being poor.”

Jo

“I care more to be loved. I want to be loved.”

“If I’m going to sell my heroine into marriage for money, I might as well get some of it.”

“Women have minds and souls as well as just hearts, and they’ve got ambition and talent as well as just beauty. And I’m sick of people saying love is all a woman is fit for.”

“I intend to make my own way in this world.”

“I’d rather be a free spinster and paddle my own canoe.”

“Writing doesn’t confer importance, it reflects it.”

“I don’t believe I will ever marry. I’m happy as I am. And I love my liberty too well to be in any hurry to give it up.”

“Life is too short to be angry at one’s sisters.”

Amy

“I will not be the person you settle for just because you can’t have her.”

“Why be ashamed of what you want?”

“I believe we have some power over who we love. It isn’t something that just happens to a person.”

“The world is hard on ambitious girls.”

“With all these good things to enjoy, you can find nothing to do but dawdle.”

“No, I’d be respected if I couldn’t be loved.”

Beth

(referring to her music) “I only do that for us. I don’t need anyone else to hear it.”

Marmee March (Laura Dern)

“Jo, don’t let the sun go down on your anger. Forgive her. Help each other. And you begin again tomorrow.”

“I hope you’ll do a great deal better than me. There are some natures too noble to curb, and too lofty to bend.”

“I’ve never understood saving jewelry until marriage. You should have something that’s just yours. Pretty things should be enjoyed.”

Aunt March (Meryl Streep)

“It is possible to be right and foolish.”

“I may not always be right, but I am never wrong.”
