‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’: Everything you need to know

Sonic is back, baby. The little hedgehog who changed gaming forever is headed back to the big screen to show us all who can go really fast. 

Sonic the Hedgehog was one of the only big-budget blockbusters to make it to theaters back in February 2020, just before the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic put movies on hold. However, the flick clearly made an impact during its short run, because Sonic is returning to theaters with a new movie, and quicker than we thought.

This week, headlines exploded with new info about the next Sonic the Hedgehog movie, and fans are chomping at the bit, wondering what the next installment is all about. Will Dr. Robotnik return? Will we get a chance to see any of Sonic’s classic pals like Tails or Knuckles or even Shadow? We’ve dug up the details about the next Sonic the Hedgehog movie to let you know what you can expect, other than a very fast blue cutie.

Long time coming

The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie had quite the buzzy story of its own. Kotaku reports a live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie was in the works as early as when the first game dropped in the 90s. 

However, things never got rolling until the early 2010s, but even then, putting the chili dog-eating emerald snatcher on screen proved to be harder than anyone thought.

Any hardcore gamers will remember when the trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog dropped in 2019, and fans roasted the depiction of a first draft CG Sonic. In fact, the fan response was so huge they caused the developers of the movie to redesign Sonic. Coming Soon reports the film was pushed back three months with the goal of better designing Sonic to look more like he does in the games. 

With Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the way, fans are wondering if the people behind the movie will try to reinvent the wheel or stick to what they know.

Back for more

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 appears to be ready for audiences without as many speed bumps as the first movie. The Wrap reported on Tuesday that director Jeff Fowler and writers Pat Casey & Josh Miller have returned for the sequel, and the film series seems to be streamlined with a consistent team.

Furthermore, the hilarious Ben Schwartz (Jean-Ralphio, anyone?) will return as the speedy star, along with human pals James Marsden & Tika Sumpter. Furthermore, comic & drama icon Jim Carrey will return as the Eggman, Dr. Robotnik himself, in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. 

We know who’s coming back for more in the next Sonic the Hedgehog movie, but anyone who knows the Sonic games knows there’s a whole cast of characters we’ve yet to see on screen. Is anyone new coming to Sonic the Hedgehog 2?

Fresh faces

Reports say Idris Elba will join the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as one of the coolest echidnas to ever hit gaming consoles playing Knuckles.

Furthermore, the logo & leaked synopsis of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 say the flick will feature Tails in a more prominent role, although we haven’t heard who will voice them yet. John Whittington will join the writing cast as another fresh face teaming up with the OGs for the Sonic sequel.

For now, we know the old & new will come together for the next Sonic the Hedgehog movie, and we can’t wait to see our spiny friends run fast, slam dogs, and snatch up some emeralds. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is set for a June production, and is to be released on April 8th.
