Bring the laughter with these new comedy movies

It may almost be Halloween, but some of us still prefer road trips & rom-coms to chills & thrills. We’ve put together a list of fresh new 2021 comedy movies to keep you screaming with laughter this spooky season.

Plan B (2021) 

If you thought Booksmart was raunchy, wait until you see Plan B, an uproarious new teen buddy comedy that also tackles some serious issues. Kuhoo Verma stars as Sunny, a sheltered midwestern high school student who unexpectedly loses her virginity at a party.

When a local pharmacist refuses to sell her the morning-after pill, she embarks on a road trip to the nearest Planned Parenthood with her best friend (Victoria Moroles) – who’s harboring some secrets of her own. Come for the shocking hijinks and whip-smart repartee – stay for the thoughtful reflections on navigating reproductive rights access in America.

Zola (2021)

“Y’all wanna hear a story about why me & this (expletive) here fell out???????? It’s kinda long but full of suspense.” So begins the viral 148-tweet-long Twitter thread that inspired Zola, a fictional recreation of the bonkers “true story” recounted by exotic dancer Aziah Wells (also called “The Greatest Stripper Saga Ever Tweeted” by Rolling Stone).

Taylour Paige stars as Zola, a dancer invited to Florida on a spur-of-the-moment work trip. If you haven’t read the Twitter thread, then we won’t spoil the rest of the (truly unhinged) plot for you, but suffice to say you’re in for the ride of your life.

Good on Paper (2021) 

What do you do when you find out that your boyfriend is a con artist? This unconventional new romantic comedy isn’t a story of “boy meets girl” so much as “boy worms his way into woman’s life by lying about everything, including his dying mother.”

Based on a true story from comedian Iliza Shlesinger (who stars and also wrote the screenplay), Good on Paper is a cautionary but still rip-roaringly funny tale about the dangers of trusting someone too early into a relationship (and not looking them up on the internet).

We Broke Up (2021) 

Some of the best romantic movies are about relationships based on a lie. In We Broke Up, a failed couple (The Good Place’s William Jackson Harper and You’re the Worst’s Aya Cash) pretends to be together for one more weekend so as not to spoil a wedding – and are forced to wrestle with their own breakup feelings in the process.

The Map of Tiny Perfect Things (2021) 

If you’re a fan of time-loop movies (Palm Springs, Groundhog Day) then you’ll find The Map of Tiny Perfect Things a welcome, if not particularly groundbreaking, new addition to the canon.

But what The Map of Tiny Perfect Things lacks in originality, it makes up for in the engaging performances of its leads (Kathryn Newton, Kyle Allen), who play a budding teenage couple forced to live out the same day over and over again. They decide to make the best of their situation by developing a map of the day’s “most perfect moments.”

Free Guy (2021) 

If you loved The Matrix, Ready Player One or The Truman Show, you’ll lap up this surreal new action comedy starring Deadpool’s Ryan Reynolds and Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer. 

Free Guy tells the story of a banker (Reynolds) who discovers he is actually a non-player character (NPC) in an open-world video game. In order to save his friends from deletion, he must transform from background player into the game’s hero.
