Can 'Wonder Woman 3' make reference to Zack Snyder's 'Justice League'? Forge on with these thoughts on the matter.

Will ‘Wonder Woman 3’ force Zack Snyder’s ‘Justice League’ to be canon?

Four years ago today, Wonder Woman came out in theatres. The 2017 film remains the best movie of the DCEU, hands down. (And before you say ‘what about Joker?’ That’s a different continuity.) While 2020’s Wonder Woman 1984 wasn’t as good as its predecessor, it did well enough for Warner Bros & DC Films to give Wonder Woman 3 the greenlight.

After that greenlight happened, Zack Snyder’s Justice League came out for fans to enjoy. The film definitely was the ending that people have been waiting for, which made the 2017 Justice League look even worse in comparison. Bucking the traditions of the first two, Wonder Woman 3 will be set in the present day. What does that mean exactly, especially in terms of continuity?

Here’s what we think.

The DCEU takes your continuity and laughs

Listen, the continuity in the DCEU is a bit of a mess. Is it as bad as the X-Men film franchise? It hasn’t reached that point yet, but it’s messy. It’s very messy. There are some contradictory things. Everything feels like it moved far too quickly, far too fast. And then Zack Snyder’s Justice League messed the timeline up even more because, well, there was time travel in it.

So it’s messy. Honestly, we’re hoping that The Flash movie pulls a Flashpoint and just kind of cosmically resets everything so we can have a fresh start in terms of continuity and feeling like everything is part of the same world. A clean slate is what we’re saying. We’re hoping that The Flash is a clean slate. That’s not to say that the original stuff with Zack Snyder’s Justice League isn’t good, but we need a cosmic reset.

Does Wonder Woman 3 need this though?

Wonder Woman 3 doesn’t need Zack Snyder’s Justice League in order to be canon. She’s a known entity now just like how Arthur Curry/Aquaman (Jason Momoa) is also a known entity in his film. But it just needs a brief mention. We don’t need a long convoluted thing about which version of Justice League is more in continuity, you know? We just need Diana’s (Gal Gadot) story, whatever that looks like.

It should provide some resolution to that story as well. Now, as we know, the Amazons got wrecked in both versions of Justice League. But, well, it would be full circle to see Diana return home in some capacity. Of course, this is all just guesswork for us at this time. The thing is that we won’t know how Wonder Woman 3 will connect to the rest of the DCEU.

What does this mean for the DCEU?

Nothing right now. It looks like that DC Films & Warner Bros are trying to make a film multiverse rather than just a universe for us to explore. While that is a smart move in terms of the types of movies that they can make without having to worry about an internal continuity, there are still films set within an internal continuity as well. Now they need to pick out what films they want to be in that universe.

Basically, if everyone prefers Zack Snyder’s Justice League to the original, then maybe that should be what the continuity follows? Anything to erase Joss Whedon’s terrible touch on Justice League. Of course, we can’t decide these things. This is the decision of those over at Warner Bros & DC Films. Sure, they make terrible decisions, but, hey, it’s all we got here.

We’ll have to see what this means for Wonder Woman 3 though.
