The best haunted hotels according to TripAdvisor, Expedia, and more

Hotels, due to their inherent transitory nature, are usually ripe for hauntings. People are constantly going or coming into a hotel. Sometimes, however, they never leave once they check-in. Hotels and haunting go hand in hand, especially when they’re older hotels. For lovers of the paranormal and supernatural, these locations are must stays so you can have yourself a ghostly encounter.

If you’re trying to figure out which haunted hotel you should stay at next, then here are some ones that travel websites such as TripAdvisor or Expedia recommend.

The Stanley Hotel (Colorado)

Ever want to know what it’s like to get inside of Stephen King’s head? The Stanley Hotel may help with that. The isolated Colorado hotel is what inspired the Overlook in The Shining and Doctor Sleep. It is absolutely stuffed with ghosts and spectres. Among the ghosts that wander the grounds are businessman Freelan Oscar Stanley and his wife Flora, chief housekeeper Elizabeth Wilson, a ghost of an autistic boy named Billy, and the ghosts of cats and dogs.

If you stay in Room 217, be prepared for some extra care from Mrs. Wilson, who will fluff your pillows. If you can’t nab 217, then perhaps you would like a night on the haunted fourth floor of the hotel instead.

The Queen Mary

Once a famed luxury cruise ship turned battleship in World War II, the Queen Mary has a history that is rich and tragic. From seeing the ghosts of people who drowned in the pool to hearing the screams of sailors from an accident during WWII, the Queen Mary is sure to get the hairs on your arms on end. The ship has since been made into a hotel and is permanently docked in California, where you can enjoy the utter splendor of the Queen Mary.

Should you want to explore, the Queen Mary offers a lot of ghost hunts and paranormal tours for guests. Though with a ship crawling with ghosts, you’ll probably spot on sooner or later.

Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel

This L.A. landmark hotel boasts some famous ghosts haunting its halls. During the glitz and glam of early Hollywood, many stars would call the hotel home. Some say, you can still see them hanging around the hotel. Marilyn Monroe is said to be seen in a mirror while Montgomery Cliff’s voice can be heard in his room. So if you’re obsessed with the glamour of the stars of yesteryear, this is the perfect hotel to stay at.

If you don’t see a ghost, then you can at least say that you’ve stayed at a place with a lot of film history. The very first Academy Awards was held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Win-win for any film nerd in our opinion.

The Don CeSar

If you want your ghosts to be more Casper and less Conjuring, then check out the Don CeSar. This soft pink hotel will definitely make an impression on you with the lovely facade and the bright blue skies. The ghosts are also ones affected by the good weather as well. The hauntings reported there aren’t scary at all. In fact, it’s down right romantic.

Hotel founder Thomas Rowe and his wife and true love Lucinda have been seen strolling together in death since the 1970s. Excuse us while we swoon over “death do us part” not being the end of this love story.

Hawthorne Hotel

Salem, Mass. definitely has a reputation for the supernatural and the creepy, which goes hand in hand with the infamous Salem Witch Trials. After a long day of looking for ghosts amongst the graves of the dead, then perhaps go stay at the Hawthorne Hotel. Now if you’re expecting the Hawthorne to have reports of ghosts related to the Witch Trials, then look elsewhere. There’s a sea captain haunting these halls. If you have a strong constitution, then be sure to stay in either room 621 or 325.
